Opal glass disc on a blackened steel arm, held 3 inches off the wall. Light leaves both faces of the glass, so it washes the wall above and below rather than punching a single spot into it.
The gap is the whole design. Mounted flush, the same disc would light a circle and stop; set off the surface, it lights the wall it is on.
Integrated LED rather than a socket, rated at 25,000 hours. Dimmable, and warm enough at 2700K to sit beside incandescent lamps in the same room without reading as a different colour.
